The gravitational pull of the Moon affects the tides of the ocean.
The stronger the Moon’s gravitational pull is, we get high tides.
The weaker the gravitational pull is, we get low tides.
If you're able to see how the Moon, a heavenly body, can affect the water in the Ocean, then you can see how the movement of the celestial bodies above us can have an effect on our bodies here on Earth. All the planets embody a certain energy and those energies have an influence on us here on Earth, just like the moon has an effect on the ebb and flow of the ocean’s tides. After all, our bodies are made up of about 60% water.
Great. Now that we’ve gotten that out the way. Mercury in retrograde. What is it and how does it affect you?
Mercury Rules
Mercury, the planet closest in orbit to our sun, rules certain aspects of our daily lives. Mercury is said to be the ruler of: speed, travel over short distances, technology and electronics, intellect and communications, transit and transportation, and processes and coordination, among other things.
When it goes retrograde it means that instead of moving forward in its orbit, from our vantage point here on Earth, it appears to move in backwards. It does this roughly three to four times every year. When a planet retrogrades, we are deprived of the benefits that planet bestows upon us.

How Mercury in Retrograde Affects Your Daily Life
Here are some things that are likely to occur when we are deprived of the benefits Mercury bestows upon us
Speed: Mercury rules speed, so when it goes retrograde, you may notice the pace of life slow down a bit. You may have to work harder to get projects off the ground and keep them running during a retrograde. Think of Mercury in retrograde as nature’s pause button, slowing us down from our hurried lifestyles.
Technology: Mercury rules technology and electronics, so when it goes retrograde, you may notice your electronics going glitchy glitchy ya ya da da. Computers may start malfunctioning, your printer may stop printing, your phone may start taking on a mind of its own. All manner of technological malfunction may ensue.
Communications: When Mercury goes retrograde, you may notice strained communications. Things may get lost in translation and folks are more prone to arguments and bickering during this time. And be forewarned, communications from old relationship partners might pop up seemingly out of nowhere. You would need to act with more patience in your communications at this time if you want to avoid frustration.
Travel: When it comes to travel, Mercury in retrograde can cause travel delays, disruptions and changes in your travel plans. I know sometimes it is simply not possible to avoid traveling. So go if you must, but be mindful that you will have to expect the unexpected and roll with the punches. Allow yourself plenty of travel time and even an extra day if you can, just in case your trip gets delayed due to the retrograde.
You may also notice more car accidents on the road than normal, more police or ambulance sirens blaring than usual, or your appointments getting canceled or rescheduled for no apparent reason. All culprits of Mercury in retrograde.
But let's look at the bright side. Mercury in retrograde is not a dreaded time where you should stay in the house and lock all the windows and doors in a panic. Instead, think of it as Nature’s way of reminding us to slow down, take our time, reduce our dependence on technological devices, and be more mindful about our actions and communications.
Exercise gratitude for this time of renewal and restoration and Mercury retrograde can become a wonderful and welcome time for you to take a momentary pause before catapulting into the next level of living.
